Love Isn’t Enough: Eros, Ludus, Philia, Storge, Pragma, Mania

So, my personal life has been poppin lately – hence the lack of posts.  We back on though and this week we’ll be discussing agape.  Agape is an unselfish love of all mankind that combines Eros + Storge.  In this type of love, individuals are willing to sacrifice anything for their loved one(s).  Agape is based on an unbreakable commitment and an unconditional, altruistic love.

Mania: My Friend’s Testimony

Mania

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness month I want to continue to share my story with the world. 🌎 Being completely transparent, 4 years ago I was in an abusive relationship with a man that most women would say was “the man of my dreams.” (It was really a nightmare.) I worked in an unhealthy work environment and I was transitioning from the Air Force which was a major life change.

Love Isn’t Enough: Eros, Ludus, Philia, Storge, Pragma

We’ve talked a lot about love in ways that were all very healthy, descriptive, fun, and positive.  However, this is not always the case.  Again, love is challenging.  It’s confusing.  It can also be dark and dangerous.  This week we’re going to discuss mania.

Love Isn’t Enough: Eros, Ludus, Philia, Storge

We’ve been writing about love for quite some time now.  In many ways, being diligent and consistent has really helped me to reevaluate a lot of what I thought I knew about love and its many different expressions.

This week, we’ll be discussing pragma or mature, practical love.  Pragma is about making compromises to help relationships work over time, as well as showing patience and tolerance.  It’s the kind of love that’s practical, mutually-beneficial, and endures through sickness and in health over the long-haul.  As a special surprise, I’m going to introduce our first guest contributor, M. Divine.

Enjoy! Continue reading “Pragma”

Love Isn’t Enough: Eros, Ludus, Philia

Here’s a quick recap of everything we’ve talked about thus far in the last few weeks.  Love confuses a lot of people because we all mean so many different things when we use the word love.  Eros is all about romantic, sexual desire or lust.  Ludus is the all about the fun and excitement we feel when dating.  Philia is brotherly love that we have for friends and acquaintances.  This week we’re going to talk about storge.

Love Isn’t EnoughEros, Ludus

So far we’ve talked about both romantic and playful love.  Now, we’re going to talk about philia or brotherly love.  Philia is the deep friendship or comradely bond that develops between coworkers, teammates, or soldiers in an army because of the shared experience that everyone has.  It is the love we feel for people we strive with to achieve a shared goal – like fighting side by side on a battlefield against a common enemy.  Philia is about showing loyalty, sacrificing, and sharing your emotions.

Love Isn’t EnoughEros

So, last week we talked about passionate, romantic love.  This week we’re going to talk about ludus, but I have a slight confession to make.  I kind of cheated.  Ludus is actually Latin and not Greek, but whatever.  It means “play, game, sport, training” and refers to the affection between children or young lovers.

While ludus is about passion, it more so encapsulates the idea of having fun with each other doing different activities.  It encompasses all the teasing and flirting that goes on in the early stages of a dating relationship.  It happens when you both are still testing out what it might be like to be together, falling in love and what not, but that’s where it all ends.  You see, in ludus, there is no commitment or responsibility involved.
